GST on fuel truck driver Australia
Claiming GST on fuel as an owner-driver
How the 1/11 rule works on fill-ups, what dockets to keep, and how to line fuel GST up with what you charged on invoices.
Not tax or legal advice. Talk to your accountant for your situation.
Most fuel dockets already include GST
If you’re GST-registered, the fuel pump price is usually GST-inclusive. The quick claim is 1/11 of the total, so a $220 fill has about $20 GST buried in it.
Keep the docket (or a clear photo). Your accountant will still want the paper trail even if the spreadsheet is tidy.
Match fuel GST to the jobs that burned it
A busy week can hide a dead lane. Log fill-ups against the run when you can. Then job profit shows rate minus fuel and extras, not just “money in the account”.
Toll tags, weighbridge fees, and workshop invoices often work the same GST-inclusive way. Same 1/11 habit.
What to put aside each quarter
Rough BAS math for many drivers: GST you charged on invoices minus GST in fuel and costs. Put the difference aside as you go so July doesn’t raid next month’s diesel money.
Not tax advice. Your lodgement still depends on your registration and your accountant. This just stops the scramble.
How OwnerHaul helps
Log fill-ups and costs when they happen, attach them to a job, and review the quarter on Tax. Export a CSV when your accountant asks for the pack.
